Porsche

The Porsche Taycan outsold the flagship 911 in the first nine months of the year. Deliveries of the Taycan hit 28,640 while deliveries of the 911 hit 27,972. The Taycan, at the time of its debut, was seen as a high-priced competition to Tesla’s newer Model S Sedans and was introduced in 2019. The 911 has been around since 1964. If that’s not a sign of the EV times, I don’t know what is.In other EV News

  • Xpeng’s flying car companyHT Aero has raised more than $500 million from outside investors for research and development of a new model that has the ability to operate in the air and on roads. The company hopes for an official roll out by 2024.

  • In the first 8 months of 2021, Tesla’s cars accounted for 66% of EVs registered in the U.S. 294,218 electric vehicles were sold between January and August, and out of those vehicles, 194,165 were Tesla's.

  • New energy vehicle (NEV) sales are expected to make up over 35% of new vehicle sales in China in 2025, according to the CEO of Xpeng Inc. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM) believes NEV sales are likely to rise from 1.4 million units last year to 3 million units this year. NEV sales made up 11.6% of China’s overall vehicle market in the first 9 months of this year.

  • $6,500 for an electric car or $8,500 for an electric truck? Changli’s ‘Grunt’ car and ‘Pak Yak’ truck are two new EVs coming to the U.S.

  • Battery maker Samsung SDI Co Ltd and automaker Stellantis NV have agreed to produce EV batteries for the North American market. The location of the battery manufacturing facility has not been officially decided. The location will be announced at a later date.

  • Research carried out by Peugeot UK found 40% of parents want their children to learn how to drive in an electric vehicle when they become of age to learn to drive.

The Indy Autonomous Challenge has 9 teams representing 21 universities competing against each other for a chance to win $1 million. The event was organized by Energy Systems Network and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the main mission of advancing technology that can “speed the commercialization of fully autonomous vehicles and deployments often leads to innovations of advanced driver systems.” The competition is this Saturday, October 23rd. In other AV News Amazon’s autonomous vehicle company Zoox has announced their plans to test vehicles in Seattle and plans to open an office there in 2022. Seattle will be the third city for Zoox to test in, after testing in San Francisco and Las Vegas. Zoox will test Toyota Highlander SUVs retrofitted with sensors and computer hardware to drive autonomously. A research team from Stanford University, hoping to modernize walking canes for visually impaired people, has borrowed AV technology to create a self-navigating smart cane. The cane is able to identify obstacles and steer users away. Testing has shown that the cane has increased walking speed for visually impaired volunteers by 18%. The cane relies on LIDAR technology while using artificial intelligence algorithms. Similar to a GPS, the cane can also be used to direct someone to a destination. Truck fleet operator Ryder System Inc. and Gatik plan to build a U.S. autonomous short-haul logistics network for Gatik to deliver goods to business customers. Gatik also will lease a fleet of trucks from Ryder as part of the partnership and add autonomous driving systems to those trucks. Gatik will start with a fleet of 20 medium-duty trucks in Dallas.
