Nissan plans to invest $17.6 billion to electrify its lineup in order to obtain long-term growth in the EV sector. The company will unveil 23 new models by 2030, with 15 of those being new electric vehicles. Nissan was an early leader in converting to electric vehicles, producing the Nissan Leaf in 2010. Nissan recently announced plans to build a $1.4 billion EV factory in the U.K. Nissan also wants to launch an EV with a solid-state battery in 2028, while increasing its global battery production capacity to 130 gigawatt-hours by the end of the decade. In other EV News It seems like you buy everything online these days and according to a recent survey by KPMG, automotive executives think that by 2030, 78% of new vehicle purchases will be done online without a test drive. I guess you really can buy everything online!  In the same survey, most executives believe around 52% of new vehicle sales in the U.S will be all-electric by 2030.  The same believe it will be around 52% in China and Japan.  It drops to around 49% for Western Europe, 41% for Brazil, and 39% for India. According to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, meeting the Biden administration’s goal of nationwide EV adoption will be difficult to obtain without intentional investment in domestic semiconductor manufacturing. Due to the pandemic, chips have already been very short on supply. Raimondo encouraged Congress to pass the Chips Act, a bill that’s passed in the Senate, but not in the House. The act would set aside $52 billion for chip manufacturing and research. Purdue engineers have developed new technology that is able to charge electric vehicles in under 5 minutes. The team uses a liquid vapor phase change to allow the charging cable to carry more amps. For example, a typical conductor may supply less than 100 amps of electrical current.  Purdue is aiming for over 2,400 amps.   The Fisker Ocean has a range of 350 miles, all-wheel drive, and 540 horsepower. Fisker aims for this car to be the most sustainable vehicle ever.  To reach this goal, the Ocean has a solar roof that can yield 1,500 miles per year, a vegan interior, and even carpet made out of recycled bottles and fishing nets.  Right now they have around 20,000 reservations and Fisker expects the Ocean will hit the streets in late 2022. Xiaomi, one of the top cell phone manufacturers in the world, is building its first EV factory in Beijing's suburbs with an end goal of launching vehicles by 2024. The factory will be built in two phases with the ultimate production capacity of 300,000 vehicles per year.

Seoul has introduced the first autonomous transportation service in South Korea. Cars began carrying passengers for free on November 30th. By the end of this year, Seoul will deploy with 6 autonomous cars. Seoul aims to have around 50 AVs by 2026. Through an app called “Tap!”, passengers can hail a ride.

  • Baidu’s non-GAAP operating income dropped by 38% year-over-year in the 3rd quarter, but analysts point to strength in the company’s autonomous sector. In GlobalData’s automotive scorecard, Baidu came in 2nd out of 75 companies with 10 criteria judged against them.

  • May Mobility, a Toyota-backed startup, has begun operating autonomous shuttles within multiple cities’ public transportation systems. And the surprising part: the company’s only been around for 4 years, and they’re way ahead of the game!  Right now, May has around 30 shuttles and they are all Level 4 with a human driver there for safety.

  • Hyundai Motor Co.’s autonomous taxis will be able to drive in darkness and bad weather conditions with an estimated speed of about 43 miles. Seoul is expecting these Level 4 taxis to hit the roads early next year. The self-driving cars are able to utilize high-precision 3D road maps to promote safety in difficult driving situations.

  • Europe’s first fully autonomous vehicle has taken to the streets of France. The bus, a driverless EZ10 shuttle, can carry up to 15 passengers. The bus has been in testing since March, but was just approved last week for use without a human safety driver.

  • Udelv has been selected by the U.S. Air Force AFWERX program for a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract. This will allow Udelv to improve flight line readiness by decreasing delivery turnaround time and improving efficiency for last and middle-mile delivery services for everything from groceries to auto parts to medical supplies through its cab-less autonomous delivery vehicles. The project is estimated to take about 15 months.

of EV battery packs has fallen dramatically to $132 per kWh. For example, if you had a 100 kWh battery pack, it would cost around $13,200 for that battery pack.  It’s believed that to be competitive with ICE vehicles, battery packs need to be around $100 per kWh.  The cost has decreased by 6% from 2020, but inflation may buck this trend.
