4 years after Tesla unveiled their electric semi-truck, things are on the move for their trucks. This week, Tesla took a semi-truck to charge at its Megacharger station at Gigafactory Nevada. Currently, Tesla has begun a low volume production line near Gigafactory Nevada, but production is expected to be years out at Gigafactory Texas. PepsiCo executives visited the factory this week to check out the semi-trucks and were quoted saying that they expect deliveries of the vehicle this quarter.

  • Out of 24 competitors, the Lucid Airwon MotorTrends Car of the Year award. For the COTY, the competition consisted of 24 competitors from major manufacturers. This is the first time that an initial product from a new automotive company has been awarded such a prestigious award. With an EPA estimated range of 520 miles, it’s no wonder the Air won.

  • The Mercedes-Benz EQS managed to hit 442 miles during a range test they performed that was carried out over 12 hours. The EQS hit an impressive mark - 77 miles more than the EPA estimates.

  • A hybrid successor to the Lexus LFAcould possibly be in the works. Reports say the vehicle will be a plug-in hybrid with a front-midship layout under a carbon-fiber body. The vehicle will have a twin-turbo 4.0 liter V8 generating around 937 horsepower. Excited? Us too. The successor is scheduled for a 2025 debut, so not much waiting time!

  • Hear us out: the Tesla Model Y or the Kia EV6? The Model Y is the best-selling EV crossover in North America, rightly so. However, the Kia EV6 has a lot of benefits weighing over Tesla, but only if they make their vehicles readily available. Right now, demand is so high for Tesla, so people wait a very long time for delivery while the automaker continues to raise prices. Both the Model Y and EV6 are crossovers with a lot of space, an impressive range and performance, and similar pricing. However, the EV6 has an extremely fast 800v charging capability and is able to power other devices. Which would you choose?

  • In the future, EVs may be able to power your house with their batteries. Instead of storing energy, Japanese scientists say that the EV’s battery could be plugged back into the grid. This ability would be able to provide cleaner grids and decrease greenhouse emissions. Right now, around 1% of the UK’s 27 million households currently own an EV, and these EVs can store up to 18 GWh of electricity overall. This huge amount of electricity can be used to power multiple houses. To make this happen, a 2-way transfer of power from the car to its charging point is needed. Also, vehicle to grid charging hardware is essential to be installed at home from power distribution networks, especially local areas to make this type of charging possible.

  • Due to the pandemic impacting the supply chain, automakers have greatly struggled with shortages. For a while, Volkswagen was able to prioritize chip supply to electric vehicles, even with the chip supply shortage. However, Volkswagen announced they would be halting EV production for a week at two German factories due to shortages. The company disclosed that it will eliminate 5,000 vehicles as a result.

While we’re used to seeing The Little Free Library in parks, South Korea is getting an updated version. Self-driving robots will soon roam around parks and lend books to people. The robot is about 1.8 meters in length and 1.2 meters in height. The library on wheels will be able to carry 100 books and follow the Tanchen trail in Seongnam City. Technology is amazing!

Florida-based company LuftCar is developing an AV that can be attached and removed from the flying module, equipped with 6 propellers, and takes off and lands like a helicopter. The AV is expected to resolve traffic congestion issues in megacities such as Dubai. While it can fly a maximum distance of 300 miles and get up to an altitude of 4,000 ft, the car can travel 150 miles on the road.

  • Stradvision, a leader in computer vision technology for Autonomous Vehicles (AV) and ADAS, will be unveiling several technologies at the Automotive Tech Week 2021. The company is set to demonstrate depth-map solutions using only a mono-channel camera instead of LiDAR. It’s also expected to produce Semantic Segmentation and a multi-camera 360-degree perception.

  • Honda’s Autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV) is one of their AVs that can go off-road. The AWV can carry up to 800 lbs and tow a trailer up to 1,653 lbs. Honda claims the vehicle can run for up to 8 hours on a single charge and has a range of up to 27.9 miles.

  • 😶‍🌫️ Waymo has begun testing their AV vehicles in San Francisco to better combat weather conditions. In San Fran, each day has a 1/3rd chance of fog. For starters, they use mobile weather stations for testing. Their sensors also use hydrophobic film, pulsed air puffer, wipers, and other techniques to stay clean in bad weather. Also, Waymo’s radar uses microwaves instead of light to create images around them. This helps them sense their surroundings easier in the fog.
