Norway, South Wales, and Incentives for EVs

CARLOS BRYANT/FLICKR

How are EVs promoted outside of the U.S.?Norway leads the way with new EVs sold. This is through lower taxes on EVs, exempt road tolls, increased taxes on ICE vehicles, and cheaper electricity rates caused by using hydroelectric power. For size reference, Norway has a geographic area the size of New Mexico.South Wales is rolling out some major incentives including waiving the taxes on EVs costing less than $75k AUD (typically a 3-5% tax), providing a $3,000 rebate for the first 25,000 EVs sold in the state, and allowing EVs to use the carpool lanes. Can these models be used elsewhere?

EV Headlines

Volvo

Tesla Energy is coming to China with the announcement of its solar panels, Powerwall, and Supercharger. Tesla Energy’s ecosystem allows for the solar panels to charge the home battery system (Powerwall) which can then be used to charge a Tesla car. Your solar panels are connected to your Powerwall, which is your home battery system and will power your charger for your Tesla. Tesla Energy mostly operates in the US, but the Powerwall is available in Germany and Australia. China is Tesla’s second biggest market by volume outside of the U.S., so we can see why this announcement makes sense. Last week we referenced Volvo and their facility in Ridgeville, SC. This week, Volvo and Northvolt AB announced a partnership to build a factory dedicated to batteries. This factory will be able to produce 50 gigawatt hours per year which will supply around 500,000 vehicles. Oklahoma is EV friendly.
