EV Headlines

It was big

Bloomberg Technology

Rivian finally went public yesterday and closed the day at $100.73/share. This was a huge day for the EV SUV and Truck manufacturer as this has helped them raise around $11.9 billion by going public. At its opening price, Rivian was already worth more than automakers Ford and GM and was valued at 86 billion. Not a bad day. Can’t wait to see some Rivians on the road.In other EV News Honda is not happy about the extra $4,500 in incentives proposed in the “Build Back Better Act”. An EVP at Honda wrote a piece saying that it gave an unfair advantage to manufacturers with union employees, essentially the Big 3, and does not strive for the ultimate goal of environmental sustainability.  Hyundai Motor Co. has taken the phrase “Sweet Home Alabama” to good use for its new electric vehicle. The company has announced the Genesis GV70 EV will be produced in the firm’s Alabama plant, making it the first electric Hyundai/Kia built in the United States. EV enthusiasts should watch for a full reveal of the GV70 EV in early 2022. Canada’s First Cobalt, now called Electra Battery Materials, aims to create North America’s first specialist facility for producing EV battery materials. Several battery metals are already produced in North America, but Electra’s facility can be a gamechanger for North American electric vehicle companies. This is huge news for automakers striving to impress America with their EV offerings because they need fast access to battery materials to produce EVs.  Mini’s Mini EVs: Mini has announced future plans of unveiling 2 electric vehicles in 2023, including the well-known Mini 3 door and a crossover model. Mini also conveyed their desire to completely electrify their fleet in the 2030s, following in the footsteps of many well-known car brands attempting to fully electrify their fleets this decade.

Apple

After dominating the cell phone world, Apple has decided to join the EV market. Apple has reportedly hired Christopher Moore, a former Tesla engineer, to help develop its autonomous car. This news follows Doug Field’s departure from the AV project to lead Ford’s tech efforts. Apple has also hired other Tesla executives in the past. In other AV News Cruise presented a detailed technical and deployment roadmap to present their game plan on building autonomous vehicles that are safer than any human-driven vehicle. They plan to offer pristine safety while driving down costs by using simulations to scale, two custom silicon chips developed in-house, and The Cruise ecosystem, which registers every object surrounding the car.  Obviously, the idea of autonomous vehicles is gaining in popularity, or I wouldn’t be here writing about the impressive advancements in vehicle technology. Like with anything, there are some popular AV trends right now to watch out for: The market is shifting from Robo-taxis to automated trucks and delivery vehicles. There has been an increase in deployment in dense urban cities. Collaboration and consolidation are sweeping the AV industry, which is great for innovation! This will allow quicker development of AV technology.  There’s a need for a harmonized approach for data sharing between diverse stakeholders.  Baidu’s COO said that self-driving cars will eventually be safer than cars operated by humans. The remarks were aimed to soothe concerns about safety following a fatal crash in August that involved the use of a driver assistant system.  HTF MI researched the Global Luxury Autonomous Vehicle Market and predicts a boom of luxury AVs from car companies such as Waymo, Baidu, Baic Motor, BYD, Tesla, Audi and Porsche in the next decade. Arkansas’ Walmarts are receiving driverless deliveries from Gatik’s self-driving trucks. On Monday, Gatik announced they pulled the safety operator from behind the wheel of 2 self-driving trucks, reaching a new milestone for the AV industry. Introducing: the Coachbuilt Autonomous Sports car that can’t be crashed and plans to be affordable to those who don’t make as much money as Elon Musk or Bill Gates. Right now, the idea is just simply that - an idea until manufacturers work with the firm behind it, Seymour Powel, to make it into a reality. This news has left me thinking - I wish I had this car when I was 16 and accidentally backed my first car into a mailbox. (Sorry, dad.)
